Conrad's 30-Year Anniversary to Service
Thirty years ago, Richard Conrad had a dream to offer Crittenden County and the surrounding counties a grocery store with every day low prices, the best customer services available while also operating a business that would be an integral, involved member of the community. Richard purchased the former Gene's IGA and immediately began to transform his store into his dream. Richard also became a very important part of the community with his colorful personality and involvement with Fohs Hall, Inc., Crittenden County Economic Development Corporation, reviving the Cave In Rock Ferry and supporting all efforts of the community. In 1989, Richard moved the store to its current location at 515 S. Main Street with the help of longtime and current employees Tim Sherrell and Martha Brandon. In 1995, after Richard's untimely death, Richard's wife Mary Cook Conrad took over the reigns and eventually purchased the business from Richard's three children. Mary continued the dream and furthered the commitment to both the community and the loyal employees of Conrad's. Mary continued to keep the store a cornerstone of the community while juggling her efforts between Conrad's Food Store and her greenhouse and landscaping business. Mary brought the store to new levels in both sales and customer service along with employees who worked with Richard and are still here today. Those loyal and committed employees are Lori Holeman, Barb Thurmond, Nancy Paris, Edna Ray, Juanita Maness, Tim Sherrell, Gina Hunt, Judy Jones, Linda Vinson, Jerri Ann Todd, Randy Sherrell and Martha Brandon. In 2002, Mike Wasielewski was brought on board to manage the store with Mary to allow her some freedom for travel and to maintain her other business. Mike had been associated with the store as a consultant with Wetterau, Inc., and Supervalu food distributors since 1993. Mike has been managing and overseeing current operations with his management team since Mary Cook Conrad's bout with cancer beginning in 2002 and through her passing in 2003. The store, building and land is owned by Richard Conrad's three children, Margie, John and Lee. The business is owned by Mary's three children, John, Sarah and Cecil. Day-to-day operations are handled by a management team organized in 1978 by Richard and continued by Mary and Mike. Members of the management team are: Mike Wasielewski, store manager; Judy Jones, assistant store manager; Tim Sherrell, meat department manager; Lori Holeman, bakery/deli manager; Shirleen Dahl, produce manager; Randy Sherrell, grocery manager; Donna Rushing, dairy/frozen manager; Cheryl "Tina" Boyd, DSD manager; Linda Vinson, co-manager; Jane Robertson, co-manager; Janie "Sissy" McFarland, co-manager; and 50 loyal, committed and concerned employees.
