Griffith

Beulah Briena Griffith, 91, of Marion, died Dec. 20 at Crittenden Hospital.

She is survived by a granddaughter, Cathy Harned of Paducah; a grandson, Gary Woodall of Wickliffe; four great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Grover Cleveland Smith and Raymond L. Griffith; a daughter, Virginia Woodall; two sisters, Ida Waldroup and Lena Sunderland; and a grandson.

Funeral services were held Dec. 22 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Darrell Clarke officiating. Burial was in Mapleview Cemetery.

Powell
Beatrice Doyle Powell, 89, of Smithland, died Dec. 19 at Western Baptist Hospital. She was a member of Dyer Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Hilda Wright of Paducah; a son, Emmett Powell of Burna; a sister, Ruth Sanders of Paducah; two grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a niece and several great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Lossie Ray Kirk and Morris G. Powell; and her parents, Emmitt and Arla Nelson Doyle.

Funeral services were held Dec. 22 at Boyd Funeral Home with Rev. Randy Beals officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Leora Katherine Belt, 80, of Marion, died Dec. 18 at her home.

She is survived by a son, Lamuel Watson of Greensboro, N.C.; a daughter, Dora Alice Watson of Lansing, Ill.; two sisters, Evelyn Atwell of Lola and Helen Watson of Marion; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Claudette Watson Ballard; two brothers; and her parents, Arch and Dora Walker Campbell.

Graveside services were held Dec. 24 at Lola Cemetery.

Hendrick
Edward Hendrick, 89, of Hampton, died Dec. 22 at Lourdes Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Dec. 29 at Boyd Funeral Home.

Thomas
David Thomas, 62, of Smithland, died Dec. 20 in Paducah.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Doris Hennessee Thomas; two sons, Jeffrey Thomas of Benton and Steven Thomas of Smithland; two daughters, Stephanie Holman and Cynthia Holman, both of Smithland; two brothers, James Slusher of San Antonio, Texas and Joseph Slusher of Rockdale, Texas; a sister, Dorothy Arnold of Fresno, Calif.; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mollie Taylor; his father, Adolphus Thomas; his stepfather, Conward Taylor; and a brother, Ray Thomas.

Funeral services were held Dec. 26 at Boyd Funeral Home with Bro. Russell Joiner officiating. Burial was in Smithland Cemetery.

Hardin
Susie V. Hardin, 95, of Marion, died Dec. 23 at Crittenden Hospital.

She was a member of Marion United Methodist Church and attended Hurricane Church Camp Meeting for 95 years without missing a year.

She is survived by a sister, Kate Mitchell of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Dec. 27 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Sister Lucy Tedrick and Rev. Wayne Garvey officiating. Burial was in Hurricane Cemetery.

Holloman
John R. Holloman, 80, of Marion, died Dec. 26 at Crittenden County Convalescent Center. He was a member of Frances Presbyterian Church and Liberty Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by two daughters, Angel McDonald of Marion and Mary Butler of Owensboro; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary A. Holloman.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Dec. 28 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Bro. Chris McDonald and Bro. Butch Gray officiating. Burial will be in Frances Cemetery.

Tabor
Pauline Beatrice Tabor, 84, of Greenville, formerly of Marion, died Dec. 25 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.

Tabor was born in Crittenden County and was a retired payroll clerk in the bookkeeping and billing department at Muhlenberg Community Hospital. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Greenville where she was a Sunday school teacher. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star No. 489.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Dec. 28 at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville with Dr. Charles Midkiff officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville.

Surviving are four daughters, Janice Montgomery of Cookville, Tenn., and Catherine Smith, Judy Bradley and Susie Lee, all of Greenville; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Tabor, formerly of Crittenden County.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Christian Life Center and Kentucky Baptist Home for Children.

Margaret E. James, 80, of Marion, died Dec. 17 at Salem Springlake Care Center.

She is survived by her husband, Merril James of Marion; a son, Billy James of Marion; a sister, Helen Adams of Melbourne, Fla.; and a grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William T. and Dewey Powell Franklin.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Dec. 20 at Mapleview Cemetery with Rev. Robert Phillips and Sister Lucy Tedrick officiating.

Gilbert Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Tharp
William "Bill" E. Tharp, 84, of Battle Creek, Mich., formerly of Tolu, died Dec. 14 at Laurels of Bedford in Battle Creek. He was a member of the Post 25 Year Club and Urbandale Baptist Church.

Tharp was born in Tolu, where he attended school. He retired as a machine operator at the Post Cereal Company in Battle Creek after 27 years.

Surviving are his wife, Ida R. Tharp of Battle Creek; a daughter, Mary N. Swallows, also of Battle Creek; a son, James R. Tharp of Dowling, Mich.; a sister, Ruby Morgan of Whitwell, Tenn.; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Odie and Grace moore Tharp, and a sister, Leila Tharp.

Funeral services were held at Bachman Hebble Funeral Chapel Dec. 18 with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery in Battle Creek.

Memorial contributions may be made to Urbandale Baptist Church Building Fund or Lifespan-Good Samaritan Hospice Care.

Thurman
Grace Mackenzie Thurman, 11 months, of Nashville, died Dec. 11.

She is survived by her parents, Greg and Ann Marie Thurman; her grandparents, Jim and Sylvia Thurman of Marion and Jim and Ann Stafford; great-grandparents Jewel Stafford, Raymond Thurman and Ray and Mary Spurlock.

Funeral services were held Dec. 13 at Harpeth Baptist Church with Mack Hannah officiating. Interment followed in Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens.

Belt
Glendel Eugene Belt, 64, of Lola, died Dec. 11 at Western Baptist Hospital. He was a self-employed farmer in Livingston County and was a member of Lola Pentecostal Church.

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Joyce Belt of Lola; two sons, Steve Belt of Indianapolis and Darwin Belt of Ledbetter; a daughter, Glenda Yancy of Nashville; his mother, Ethel Belt of Salem; three brothers, Raymond Belt of Marion, Deon Belt of Salem and Leon Belt of Granite City, Ill; three grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Corbet Belt.

Funeral services were held Dec. 14 at Lola Pentecostal Church with Rev. Tim Fouts and Rev. Kenneth Brand officiating. Boyd Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in Lola Cemetery.

Jones
Funeral services for Robert Lee Jones, 51, of Crayne, were held Dec. 17 at Morgan's Funeral Home in Princeton with Rev. Mike Littrell officiating. Burial was in Fredonia Cemetery.

Jones, a retired crane operator at Vulcan Material Co., died Dec. 14 at his home.

Surviving are his wife, Kathy June Jones of Crayne; two sons, Robert James Jones and George Lee Jones, both of Crittenden County; a daughter, Shelia Kay Jones Cartwright of Crittenden County; four brothers, James Jones, Junior Jones and William "Redbird" Jones, all of Caldwell County, and Raymond "Redeye" Jones of Cynthiania; six sisters, Hilda Krydnski of Chicago, Bonnie Cruce, Mary Sue Cruce, Earlyne Roberts and Maxine Beavers, all of Caldwell County and Anna Pearl Jones of Livingston County; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eva Mae Rushing and James Carter Jones.

Riley
James Riley, 79, of Eddyville, died Dec. 12 at Crittenden Hospital. Funeral services were held Dec. 15 at Lakeland Funeral Home in Eddyville with Rev. Steve MoVay, Rev. Bob Bouser and Rev. Grant Sullivan officiating. Burial was in Kuttawa Cemetery.

Riley, who was a self-employed contractor, was a World War II Army veteran and a member of Eddyville United Methodist Church.
He was a member of Suwanee Masonic Lodge No. 190 in Kuttawa; Scottish Rite in South Bend, Ind.; Ripah Temple in Madisonville; the Princeton Fraternal Order of Elks and the Princeton American Legion.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth Foster Riley; a son, Joe Riley of Eddyville; four brothers, David Riley of Salem, Jack Riley of Louisville, Dick Riley of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., Bill Riley of Munster, Ind.; a granddaughter; five step grandchildren; a step great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Paul Riley; a brother, B.J. Riley, Jr., and by his parents, Bartley Riley Sr., and Willie Wolford Riley.

Fritts
Annie Mae Fritts, 83, of Hickory, formerly of Marion, died Nov. 20 at Jackson Purchase Medical Center in Mayfield. She was a member of Viola Baptist Church in Hickory and was a 1976 graduate of Mid-Continent Bible College at Mayfield where she was employed until her death.

She is survived by her ex-husband, John Kenneth Fritts; a daughter, Wilma Kay Lewis of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Alma Postelweight Conger; a son, Bennie Kenneth Fritts; and two grandchildren.

Visitation was held at Brown Funeral Home in Mayfield Nov. 23 and funeral services Nov. 24 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Dr. Ray Carroll and Rev. Wallace Smith officiating. Burial was in Crooked Creek Cemetery.

Easley
Eddie Bruce Easley, 65, of Marion, died Dec. 16 at Salem Springlake Care Center.

He is survived by his mother, Virginia Hughes Easley of Marion; two sons, Chris Easley of Marshall County and Phillip Easley of Nashville; a daughter, Jill Whitsell of Fulton; three sisters, Maggie Ames of Indianapolis, Jerilyn May of Marion and Danielle Franklin of Princeton; three brothers, Larry Easley and Keith Easley, both of Tolu, and Noble Easley of Marion; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Woody Easley.

Funeral services will be held at a later date; however, friends and relatives will meet at Salem Springlake Care Center in Room 510 between 2-4 p.m., Dec. 22.

Croft
Erma Croft, 88, of Marion, died Dec. 18 at Salem Springlake Care Center. She was a member of Pleasant Grove General Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Marcella Cooper of St. Louis and Anna Lou Whitt of Marion; two sons, Truman Croft of Marion and Danny Croft of Paducah; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Croft.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Dec. 20 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Herbert Alexander and Rev. Wendell Ordway officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Kirk
Allie Kirk, 99, of Marion, died Dec. 8 at Crittenden County Convalescent Center. He was a member of Crayne USA Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by a son, Houston Kirk of Marion; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 10 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Philip Faulk officiating. Burial was in Mapleview Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera Kirk.

Hackney
Wanda Laverne Hackney, 73, of Salem, died Dec. 6 at Western Baptist Hospital. She was a member of Union Baptist Church.

Surviving are five sons, Steve Hackney, Ricky Hackney and David Hackney, all of Salem, Danny Hackney of Grand Rivers and Dale Hackney of Marion; five daughters, Judith Thurman and Wanda Hamby, both of Marion, Monda Watson of Salem, Martha Stinnett of Dycusburg and Patsy Luedbehusen of Ferdinand, Ind.; a brother, Tommy Franklin of Salem; three sisters, Iva Rolle of Wisconsin, Patsy Ruth Hutchcraft of Evansville and Doris Jane Moore of Marion; 20 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hackney.

Funeral services were held Dec. 9 at Union Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Phillips and Rev. A.C. Hodge officiating. Burial was in Union Cemetery.

Sanders
Lydia Marie Sanders of Smithland died Dec. 5 at Western Baptist Hospital. She was a 30-year member of Southland Baptist Temple in Paducah.

She is survived by two sisters, Manita Singleton of Salem and Suzzie Hardin of Evansville; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Sanders; four brothers; and two sisters. Her parents were Jim Myrick and Flossie Greenwalt Myrick.

Funeral services were held Dec. 8 at Boyd Funeral Home with Rev. Harold Council officiating. Burial was in Hampton Cemetery.

Croft
Opal Ailene Croft, 82, of Salem, died Dec. 11 at Crittenden Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Dec. 13 at New Union Baptist Church with Rev. David Davis and Rev. Arthur Austin Jr., officiating. Burial will be in New Union Cemetery.

Surviving are a daughter, Hazel Croft of Salem; a son, Perry Croft of Salem; two sisters, Wilma Gilland and Leva Collins, both of Salem; a brother, Allen Hosick of Benton; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, C.W. Croft; a brother; a sister; and her parents, George and Janie Millikan Hosick.

Belt
Glendell Belt, 64, of Salem, died Dec. 11 at Western Baptist Hospital.

Arrangements were incomplete at Boyd Funeral Home in Salem.

Oliver
Bill B. Oliver, 52, of Machesney Park, Ill., died Dec. 2 at his home. He was born in Marion and lived in Rockford 35 years.

He was employed in automobile sales for 28 years, most recently by Webb Boys in Harvard, Ill. He was previously employed by Humphrey Cadillac and Olds and Rockford River Ford for many years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

He was active in fund raising for the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation and the Illinois Parents Association.

Surviving are his wife, Judy Oliver of Machesney Park; a daughter, Alicia Oliver of Machesney Park; his father, Stan Oliver of Rockford; a brother, Jim Oliver of Machesney Park; two sisters, Cheryl Oliver and Tammy Oliver, both of Machesney Park and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Palestine Oliver.

Funeral services were held Dec. 7 at Christenson Funeral Home with Rev. Roland Boyce officiating. Burial was in Scandinavian Cemetery.

Woodside

Willard E. Woodside, 94, of Hudson, Fla., died Nov. 16 at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. He was born in Crittenden County and moved from Henderson to Florida in 1957.

He was a member of Pearl of the West F&AM, 146 Shriners Lodge, Egypt Temple and a member of Beacon Baptist Church in Hudson.

Surviving are a daughter, Robbin Stephens of Hudson; two grandchildren; two sisters, Opal Harmon of Paducah and Lorene Marvel of Louisville; and several cousins of Marion.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Anna Mae Pool Woodside. His parents were Odie and Berthe Gass Woodside. Funeral services were held at Beacon Baptist Church with burial in Grace Memorial Garden. Bell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

O'Hara
Edwina O'Hara, 76, of Marion, died Dec. 3 at Crittenden Hospital. She was a member of Marion United Methodist Church, a 1946 graduate of the University of Mississippi, a member of Delta Zeta Sorority and a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

She is survived by a daughter, Frances Woodring of Sturgis; two grandchildren; and one niece.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dickey O'Hara; and her parents, George and Sybil Jones.

Funeral services were held Dec. 5 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne Garvey officiating. Burial will be in Kuttawa Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Kuttawa Cemetery, Box 122, Kuttawa, KY 42055.

LeFan
Sanders "Cotton" LeFan, 78, of Dycusburg, died Nov. 30 at Hilltop Nursing Home. He was a member of Mexico Baptist Church and retired from SKW Alloys. He was an avid horseman.

Surviving are his wife Mary LeFan of Dycusburg; three sons, Philip LeFan, Dennis LeFan and Kevin LeFan, all of Dycusburg; five grandchildren; a brother, W.C. LeFan of LaGrange; and a sister, Dorothy Dyer of Baskett, Ky.

Funeral services were held Dec. 3 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Rodney Groff officiating. Burial was in Dycusburg Cemetery.

Sutton
Ivan "Bowie" Sutton, 85, of Marion, died Nov. 28 at Crittenden Hospital. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Pacific Theatre.

Surviving are a stepdaughter, Vicki Harris of Marion; three step grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Sutton; two brothers, Eldon Sutton and Glenn Sutton; and his parents, S.D. and Ada Sutton.

Funeral services were held Nov. 30 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Cortis Hill officiating. Burial was in Mapleview Cemetery.

Eskew
James Michael Eskew, 57, of Marion, died Nov. 27 at his home.

He is survived by three brothers, John Wayne Eskew, Paul Eskew and David Eskew, all of Marion; and a sister, Barbara Eskew of Marion.

Graveside services were held Dec. 1 at Mapleview Cemetery with Rev. Wayne Winters officiating. Gilbert Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Dixon
Evelyn Dixon, 74, of Marion, died Nov. 27 at Western Baptist Hospital.

She is survived by several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Liss and Ruth Ann Thomas.

Funeral services were held Nov. 30 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Phillips officiating. Burial was in White's Chapel Cemetery.

Lilly
Mildred T. Lilly, 97, of Shelbyville, Tenn., formerly of Marion, died Dec. 3. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Dec. 7 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Darryl Croft officiating. Burial will be in Mapleview Cemetery.

She is survived by seven daughters, Jane Corley of Shelbyville, Ann Hollister of South Boston, Va., Joel Johnson of Alexandria, Va., Joyce Spencer of San Diego, Calif., Rosa Cage of Santa Anna, Calif., Peggy Chandler of Georgetown, Ohio and Donna Marcus of Miami, Ohio; two sons, William Lilly of Columbus, Ohio and Danny Lilly of Bay Point, Calif; 24 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Lindsey
Warner N. Lindsey, 83, of Fredonia, died Dec. 3 at Hilltop Nursing Home. He was a member of Frances Baptist Church.

He is survived by a daughter, Joy Knight of Dycusburg; two sons, Ricky Lindsey and Larry Lindsey, both of Dycusburg; two sisters, Louise Boyd of Marion and Hazel King of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Lindsey; and a son, Johnny Lindsey.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Dec. 6 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Eugene Wyatt officiating. Burial will be in Dycusburg Cemetery.

Johnson
Funeral services for Willard Johnson, 73, of Marion, will be held at 11 a.m., Dec. 6 at Boyd Funeral Home in Salem. Rev. David Winders and Rev. Herbert Alexander will officiate, with burial in White's Chapel Cemetery.

Johnson died Dec. 3 at Western Baptist Hospital.

Surviving are his wife, Thelma Johnson of Marion; two sons, Larry Johnson and Bruce Johnson, both of Marion; a daughter, Carolyn Cessna of Madisonville; a brother, James Johnson of Marion; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services for Ruth E. VanHooser, 93, of Marion, were held Nov. 20 at Gilbert Funeral Home. Rev. Cortis Hill and Rev. Bill Crabtree officiated. Burial was in Mapleview Cemetery.

VanHooser, a member of Calvery Baptist Church in Crayne, died Nov. 18 at Crittenden Hospital.

She is survived by a son, Bobby Don Gilland of Marion; two daughters, Helen Corn of Litchfield, Ill., and Jean Foster of Springfield, Ill.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, James Gilland and Luke VanHooser; and two daughters, Virginia Corn and Laverne Croft.

Fritts
Annie Fritts, 83, of Hickory, formerly of Marion, died Nov. 20 at Jackson Purchase Medical Center. She was a member of Viola Baptist Church and was a 1976 graduate of Mid-Continent Bible College.

She is survived by her husband, John Kenneth Fritts; a daughter, Wilma Kay Lewis of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Smith
Funeral services were held Nov. 27 for Helen L. Smith, 81, of Marion. She died Nov. 25 at Crittenden Hospital.

Sister Lucy Tedrick officiated the ceremony. Burial was in Mapleview Cemetery.

She is survived by several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Smith.

Moore
James Bruce Moore, 69, of Marion, died Nov. 26 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. He was a retired administrator in the Crittenden County School District, a graduate of Murray State University and charter president of tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity at Murray State and a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Air Force.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Moore, of Marion; two daughters, Denette Wynn of Marion and Alison Gilchrist of Lone Oak; a granddaughter; and two step grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle and Sally Eskew Moore.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Nov. 29 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Bill McCormick and Rev. Jack Ferguson officiating. Burial will be in Mapleview Cemetery.

Thelma McDowell, 86, of Fredonia, died Nov. 16 at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah. She was a homemaker and member of Glenn's Chapel United Methodist Church in Lyon County.

Surviving are two sons, Ricky McDowell and Eddy L. "Ike" McDowell, both of Fredonia; three sisters, Rhea Stinnett of Dycusburg, Dorris Thompson of West Memphis, Ark., and Ruth Cooke of St. Louis; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Nell Dills, 90, of Clay, died Nov. 16 at Shemwell Nursing Home in Providence. She was a member of Shady Grove Eastern Star No. 505; the White Shrine of Marion; and First Baptist Church in Clay.

Survivors include two sisters, Ora Belle Winstead of Dearborn Heights, Mich., and Virginia Beinkampen of Chicago; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, and a son, Bobby.

Grandstaff
H. Preston Grandstaff, 81, of Menomonie, Wisc., died April 12, 2001 at Myrtle Werth Hospital-Mayo Health System in Menomonie.

Grandstaff was born in Tolu and attended grade school in Rosiclare, Ill. He trained in optical dispensing at White Haines Optical Co., in Springfield, Ill, and worked for Uhleman Optical in Springfield. He later worked in Minnesota and as manager of Duffens Contact Lens Co., in Kansas, fitting both artificial eyes and contact lens for ophthalmologists.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Eliza; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew J. and Jessie P. Bryles Grandstaff; a brother, Robert Grandstaff; and a nephew.

Funeral services were held April 18 at Christ Lutheran Church in Menomonie with burial in Christ Lutheran/Halvorson Cemetery.

Phinney
Former FDR bodyguard dies at 94

Waldo Adam Phinney Sr., 94, of Port Royal, S.C., died Oct. 29 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Graveside services were held Nov. 1 at Beaufort National Cemetery.

Phinney was born in Borne, Mass. He served in the U.S. Marine corps for 31 years. He was a marksmanship coach at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., and was one of the first Marines transferred to the legation guard at Peking, China. It was at that station that he won his first shooters medal. After two years in China, he was transferred to Quantico.

While stationed at Quantico, he served as bodyguard to President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1934.

He joined the Marine Rifle Team in 1933 and served with the old Floating Battalion, a forerunner of the present-day Fleet Marine Force.

He was on the rifle team at Quantico for two years before making his first trip to Camp Perry in 1935. He set a new record in 1936 when he won the National Open Individual Rifle championship at Camp Perry. He also established a new record at Quantico in 1937. Between matches in those years, he served at posts across the U.S.

Firing for the final time as team shooter in 1940, Phinney attended an officers candidate course at the beginning of World War II. He also served in the Korean War. He won the Daniel Boone Trophy for his marksmanship.

He served from Warrant Officer to 1st Lt., and served with the 6th Marine Division in Okinawa. He received the Silver and Bronze stars. He retired to Port Royal, S.C., in 1957, known as the "Man of the Sea." He was also a Mason for more than 60 years and a member of the Port Royal Lodge.

Surviving are his wife, Catherine Stentiford Phinney of Port Royal; three daughters, Priscilla Parmley and Marlyn Graddy of Marion, and Janet Sue Woodrich of Beaufort, S.C.; a son, Waldo "Wally" Phinney, Jr., of Beaufort; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Metcalfe
George Metcalfe, 84, of Marion, died Nov. 9 at his home.

Funeral services were held Nov. 13 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Phillips officiating. Burial was in Crowell Cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy "Dot" Metcalfe of Marion; a daughter, Ruth Knight of Marion; a sister, Lucy Hauser of Oakland, Md.; and six grandchildren all of Marion; 16 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; three step great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Henry Eugene Walton, 37, of Marion, died Nov. 10 in Sacramento, Calif. Cause of death is under investigation by the Sacramento, Calif., Coroners Office.

Woolridge
Dr. Elizabeth Woolridge, 93, of Salem, died Nov. 11 in Tulsa, Okla. Graveside services were held at Salem Cemetery Nov. 15 with Rev. Cortis Hill officiating.

Woolridge graduated from Salem High School and Murray State Teacher's College. She taught English at Salem High School for several years and retired as a professor of mathematics at North Alabama University in Florence, Ala.

She is survived by a son, David Woolridge of Tulsa; a brother, Charles Taylor of Salem; a nephew; and two great-nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Manse Woolridge; a brother, Frank Parke Taylor, Jr.; and her parents, Frank Taylor and Lillie Hord Taylor.

Runyon
Donald Ray Runyon, Sr., 57, of Glasgow, died Nov. 20 at the T.J. Samson Community Hospital.

Runyon was a truck driver and a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Portlock Runyon of Glasgow; three sons, Lloyd Edward Runyon of Elizabethtown, Elvis Leon Runyon of Corydon, Ind., and Roger Dale Runyon of LaGrange; two daughters, Ruth Ann Hall of LaGrange and Linda Gail Hughes of Elizabethtown; a stepdaughter, Sara Jeannette Walker of Glasgow; two stepsons, Steven Tyrone Carter of Marion and William Gregory Carter of Bardstown; three brothers, Ernest Runyon, Tommy Runyon and David Runyon, all of Glasgow; and nine grandchildren;

Fada Cook Owen, 89, of Paducah, died Nov. 9 at Life Care Center in LaCenter. She was a member of Oaklawn Baptist Church of Paducah.

Webb
Rev. Wilbur B. Webb, 75, of Jackson, Miss., formerly of Marion, died Oct. 28 in Ridgeland, Miss.

Webb, who was pastor of Schlater Baptist Church until his death, was a former pastor at Marion Baptist Church. He grew up in Mississippi, served in the U.S. Navy and joined the ministry in 1951. He held a Bachelor's Degree from Mississippi College and a Master's Degree in Psychology of Religion from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville.

He served as a pastor 51 years, 35 of which were spent in the Mississippi Delta.

Webb is survived by his wife of 50 years, Bonnie Webb of Jackson; three sons, W. Douglas Webb of Jackson, Robin T. Webb of New York City and Larry L. Webb of Atlanta; a sister, Frances Shelton of Jackson; a brother, Thompson Berry Webb, Jr., of Fayetteville, Ark.; five grandchildren; and seven nieces and nephews.

Ina Lois King, 87, of Frances, died Oct. 18 at NHC Nursing Home in Dawson Springs.

She is survived by five sons, Billy Joe Millikan of Marion, Robert Millikan of Marion, Harold King of Burns Harbor, Ind., Jim King of Smithland and Timmy King of Marion; two daughters, Julie Brantley of Marion and Faye Harris of Fredonia; five sisters, Clara Belle Green of Green Bay, Wisc., Mary Butery of Newby, Mo., Lea Winnegar of Peidmont, Mo., Sally Tabor of Marion and Ann Ingle of Waterloo, Ill.; three brothers, Ed Millikan of Speedwell, Tenn., Orlin Millikan and A.J. Millikan, both of Marion; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse King, and a brother, William Millikan of Indiana. Her parents were Carroll Millikan and Iva Mae Jones Millikan.

Harvey
Berna Driver Harvey, 83, of Rolla, Mo., died Oct. 12 in Rolla. A memorial service was held Oct. 19 at Null and Son Funeral Home.

Harvey was born in Marion. Her parents were Hugh Warren and Nona Reid Driver, who preceded her in death. Harvey was program director at the University of Missouri-Rolla and worked with the Student Union Board until her retirement in 1984.

Surviving are her husband, Ned Harvey of Rolla; a daughter, Mary Bennett of Lexington; two sons, Hugh Harvey of Whitefish Bay, Wisc., and Buz Harvey of Rolla; and three grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles Driver.

Joseph Leon Stewart, 69, of Salem, formerly of Lowell, Ind., died Oct. 18 at Livingston Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Stewart of Salem; a daughter, Sandra Haberlin of Salem; a sister, Alice Stephenson of Florida; a brother, Noble Stewart, Jr., of Whiting, Ind.; and four grandchildren.

His parents were Noble Stewart, Sr., and Pearl Reed Stewart.

Pauline Russell James, 83, of Marion, died Oct. 21 at Crittenden County Convalescent Center. She was a retired secretary at Welborn Baptist Hospital in Evansville.

He was a veteran of World War II.

Robert Jackson Hodge, 66, of Cary, N.C., died Oct. 9.

A retiree from IBM with 23 years of service, he was a successful fund raiser for North Carolina State University's College of Veterinary Medicine.

Survivors include his wife, Donna L. Hodge of Cary; a son, Todd Hodge of Cary; his mother and stepfather, Zula and Gilbert Tabor of Princeton; and a sister, Jerry Sullenger of Princeton.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jewell Osborne Hodge.

John Paul Joyce, 63, of Paducah, died Oct. 13 at Loudes Hospital. He was a retired U.S. Airforce Colonel and veteran of the Vietnam War.

J.B. Caraway, 75, of Caldwell County, died Oct. 12 at Caldwell County Hospital. He was a farmer and member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church.

Alvie Jewell "Abe" Null, 73, of Hampton, died Oct. 10 at Crittenden Hospital.

Survivors include two daughters, Melva Louis Richmond of Burna and Patricia Woodall of Marion; two sisters, Thelma Rooker of Louisville and Lavana Driver of Grand Rivers; a brother, J.W. Null of Minnesota; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Rosalie B. Austin, a 38-year school teacher in the Hardin County, Ill., school system, died Oct. 14 at Eldorado Care Center in Eldorado, Ill.

Austin, 77, was a member of First Baptist Church of Cave In Rock, the Eastern Star Lodge No. 1022 in Cave In Rock and was active in the Cave In Rock Lions Club.

Geneva Dycus, 93, of Marion, died Oct. 4 at Lourdes Hospital. Funeral services for the long-time Dycusburg resident were held Oct. 6 at Dycusburg Methodist Church with Rev. Rob Hughes officiating. Burial was in Dycusburg Cemetery. Gilbert Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Dycus was a retired school teacher from the Ross Township School System in Indiana and was a member of the Retired Teachers Associations of Kentucky and Indiana.

Dycus was a member of the Woman's Club of Marion, the Homemakers Club and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Harry G. "Buddy" Stone, 75, of Hebbardsville, formerly of Crittenden County, died Oct. 8 at St. Marys Medical Center in Evansville.

He was a retired truck driver with Rose Brothers Trucking Company; a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army; a Kentucky Colonel; and a member of Fairview Baptist Church in Bluff City.

Stone was the founder of The Stone Family gospel group.

Winders, a volunteer fireman and U.S. Army veteran, was retired after 32 years with the New Hampshire Department of Transportation. He died Sept. 7 at Western Baptist Hospital.

Asbridge
Funeral services for Vicki Ann Asbridge, 54, of Marion, were held Aug. 26 at Boyd Funeral Home with Bro. John East officiating. Burial was in Union Cemetery. Asbridge died Aug. 23 at her home.

Asbridge is survived by three sons, Pat Asbridge, Jeff Asbridge and Troy Asbridge, all of Marion; her father, Edwin Bradford of Marion; three brothers, Eddie Bradford of Arkansas, Bernie Bradford and Charles Bradford, both of Marion; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Gracie Pauline Bradford.

Tucker
Thomas N. Tucker, 86, of Marion, died Aug. 24 at Lourdes Hospital.

He was a graduate of Marion High School and the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. After returning home, he joined the funeral business which his father established in 1904, and operated Tucker Funeral Home until 1981 when it was sold and became Gilbert Funeral Home. During the 1900s, he served the district funeral directors in several capacities.

He will be remembered as one of the Crittenden County historians who enjoyed reminiscing. He was one of the oldest members of Marion United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel, and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Tucker Frazer. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. W.O. Tucker.

Gene L. Stevens, 79, of Louisville, formerly of Salem, died Aug. 24 at his home.

He retired after a 20-year career in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the American Legion.

Surviving are a daughter, Kathy Moulden of Louisville; Carol Incledon of Hopewell Junction, NY; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Muriel Stevens; and his parents, J.L. Stevens and Effie W. Wolford Stevens.

Travis
Fred A. Travis, 83, of Marion, died Aug. 27 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.

He was a World War II veteran, where he served 5 1/2 years in the South Pacific in the 149th Infantry of the U.S. Army. He also served in the National Guard.

Surviving are his wife, Leva Travis; a son, Eddie R. Travis of Nashville; a daughter, Annetta Spencer of Clarksville, Tenn.; two sisters, Brinnie Andrews of Marion and Vernie Asher of Benton; and two grandchildren.

Dickie Nix, 58, of Princeton, died Aug. 27 at his home. He was a retired pipe fitter at Westlake Corporation.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and member and deacon at Lewistown Christian Church.

Phillips
Funeral services for Roger Wayne Phillips, 77, of Ledbetter, will be held at 11 a.m., Aug. 30 at Boyd Funeral Home. Rev. Jim Wring and Rev. David Brasher will officiate. Burial will be in Hampton Cemetery.

Phillips died Aug. 27 at Western Baptist Hospital.

He was a member of North Livingston Hampton Baptist Church, a six-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific during World War II and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was retired from ISP in Calvert City.

Surviving are his wife, Mayme Phillips; a daughter, Kendra Phillips of Ledbetter; a sister, Carolyn Brasher of Benton; a brother, Rodney Phillips of Reidland; and several nieces and nephews.

His parents were Roger and Jewell Daily Phillips.

traffic accident on Ky. 70 near Frances. She attended Dycusburg Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, George "T.J." Todd of Dycusburg; her mother, Darlene Gulledge of Marion; and one granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her father, Melvin Gulledge.

Fred Eugene Hughes, 78, of Carrsville, died Aug. 20 at Lourdes Hospital. He was a member of Carrsville Pentecostal Church and Carrsville Masonic Lodge No. 812. He was retired from SKW in Calvert City.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine Hughes; three daughters, Carolyn Greer of Hampton, Charlotte Williams of Carrsville and Pattie Hopwood of Symsonia; a son, Freddie Hughes II of Carrsville; a brother, James Hughes of Carrsville; a sister, Juanita McDowell of Joy; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Campbell
Funeral services for William Martin "Jack" Campbell, 87, of Marion, were held Aug. 18 at Gilbert Funeral Home. Rev. Ed Clement, Rev. Tim Baker and Rev. Jerry Thurman officiated. Burial was in Mapleview Cemetery.

Campbell died Aug. 16 at Livingston Hospital. He was a member of Seven Springs General Baptist Church, was retired from U.S. Steel, worked at Lafayette Heights Spar Mines and Camp Breckenridge and was a disabled World War II veteran.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Rowena Thurman Campbell; a daughter, Peggy Ritch of Marion; a son, William Ed Campbell of Lincoln, Neb.; a sister, Ola Mae Holder of Marion; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Ada Belle Campbell; a granddaughter, Christa Ritch; and a sister, Mary Belle Holder.

Feltner
Emma Lee Ramage Lovett Feltner, 66, of Paducah, died Aug. 16 at Parkview Nursing and Rehab Center. She was a member of Olivet Baptist Church.

Survivors include a brother, Erin Ramage of Panama City, Fla.; two daughters, Carolyn King of Paducah and Dianne Gissell of Gilbertsville; her mother, Mae Dickerson Ramage of Burna; and one granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Rev. James Lovett; her second husband, Marshall Feltner; and her father, Ross Ramage.

Aguilera is survived by two daughters, Kimberly Aguilera and Leanne Aguilera, both of Westville; a son, Todd Aguilera, also of Westville; two stepchildren, Frank Charles Aguilera of Lake Moor, Ill., and Tammy Lin Gleason of Palatine, Ill.; a sister, Hazel Lee Ford of Portage, Ind.; four brothers, J.D. Myers of Marion, Kenneth Myers of Paducah, Delmer Myers of Portage, Ind., and Wayne Myers of Clay.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Louis and Hazel May Hayes Myers; and a brother, William Franklin.

Jonas Harlin Hunter, 78, of Marion, died Aug. 14 at Regional Medical Center at Madisonville.

Chapman
Funeral services for Firdie Mae Chapman, 79, of Marion, will be held at 11 a.m., Aug. 25 at Gilbert Funeral Home. Rev. Ed Clement will officiate. Burial will be in Lewis Cemetery.

Chapman died Aug. 21 at Crittenden Hospital. She was a member of the C.M.E. Methodist Church of Marion and the Senior Citizens Committee. She was retired from the dietary department of Crittenden Hospital.
Surviving are four daughters, Carolyn Shack of Marion, Mary Ann Moore of Detroit, Letitia Chapman of Indianapolis and Debbie Chapman of Paducah; a brother, George E. Bruton of Indianapolis; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

William Marshall Lanham, 77, of Paducah, died Aug. 8 at Livingston Hospital. He was a member of Gospel Missionary Baptist Church and a member of the Masonic Rite of Ledbetter Lodge No. 952. He was a retired U.S. Steel employee and owner of Lanham's TV and Radio Repair.

Manley died Aug. 8 at Crittenden County Convalescent Center. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, a former Crittenden County magistrate and a former member of the Crittenden County Board of Education.

He is survived by three sons, Jimmie R. Manley of Marion, Bobbie Dean Manley of Odessa, Fla., and Bennie Manley, Jr., of Maryville, Tenn.; two sisters, George Erma Dassel and Betty Jane Napier of Evansville; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Selma J. Manley and his parents, George H. and Ruby Gass Manley.

Penn
Funeral services for Richard Penn, 41, of Marion, were held Aug. 10 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Rollie Straton officiating. Burial was in Deer Creek Cemetery.

Penn died Aug. 8 at his home.

He was a member of the Marion-Crittenden County Park Board and was a major force in organizing adult recreational softball in Marion.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Penn of Marion; his mother, Pauline Fryar of Marion; two stepsons, Johnny Hackney of Marion and James Hackney of Sturgis; three stepdaughters, Kathy Fox of Murray, Pam Todd of Marion and Linda Campbell of Reidland; a brother, Timmy Penn of Marion; two sisters, Kathey Eaton of Marion and Joyce Roberts of Mississippi; nine step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Glenn Penn; a brother, Tony Penn; and a nephew, Garry Roberts.

Claude Belt, 66, of Marion, died Aug. 8 at Salem Springlake Care Center. He attended Hurricane Methodist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Sharon Henshaw and Pat Tolley, both of Lola, and Cindy Johnson of Morganfield; a son, Keith Belt of Wadesville, Ind.; two brothers, Percy Belt and Ed Belt, both of Marion; two sisters, Catherine Newcom of Benton and Bernice Woodall of Evansville; and two grandchildren.

Logan "Logi" Allen Hobbs, age 2 1/2, of Vance, Ala., died Aug. 8 at Children's Hospital in Birmingham.

Van Laan
Ava Rae Van Laan of Bay City, Mich., formerly of Marion, died Aug. 1 at Bay Medical Center in Bay City. She was 82.

Van Laan was born in Crittenden County and graduated from Shady Grove High School. She attended Sugar Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church as a youth. She most recently was a member of First Baptist Church in Essexville, Mich., where she served in many areas of ministry.

She taught school in Marion for two years before moving to Bay City and worked in a munitions plant in World War II.

Surviving are two daughters, Carol Bright of Wausaw, Wisc., and Beverly Jo Bristow of Bay City; a son, Charles Van Laan of West Memphis, Ark.; six grandchildren; and five nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter C. Van Laan. Her parents were William and Ada Belle Lamb.

Thurmond
Edna Earl Thurmond, 72, of Marion, died Aug. 5 at Livingston Hospital.

Survivors include four daughters, Sharon Murray and Donna Joyce of Marion, Kathy Allen of Princeton and Pam Perryman of Lola; a son, Randy Travis of Marion; her mother, Mary Babb of Marion; two sisters, Betty Dunbar and Sue Belt, both of Marion; a brother, Ronnie Babb of Henderson; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Aretta Miniard, 82, of Fredonia, died Aug. 7 at Livingston Hospital. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Aubrey Leigh Rundles, infant daughter of J.R. and Melissa Crump Rundles of Grand Rivers, died July 24 at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah.

Mable Marie Carter, 90, of San Jose, Calif., formerly of Salem, died June 22 in San Jose.

She is survived by two sons, Russell C. Partain and James G. Lagodzinski, both of California; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Roy Partain, Frank Lagodzinski and Trice Carter; and two sisters, Helen Mott and Freda Stephenson. Her parents were John and Lydia Osman.

Lucas
Funeral services for Robert Evan "Bob" Lucas, 74, of Chandler, were held July 23 at Koehler Funeral Home in Chandler, Ind., with Ronald A. Willis officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery in Chandler.

Lucas died July 19 at the St. Mary's Medical Center.

He was a member of the Chandler United Methodist Church where he served on the Pastor-Parish committee. He retired in 1984 after 37 years of service at Whirlpool. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving in World War II. He was a member of Strangers Rest Masonic Lodge No. 240, Evansville Scottish Rite and Hadi Shrine, and served on Warrick City Council. He was a Chandler Town Board member.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marjorie Lucas of Chandler; a daughter, Cindy Steale of Evansville; two sons, Ronald Evan Lucas and Brian K. Lucas, both of Chandler; a foster son, James Peterson; a brother, Paul Glyn Lucas of Tulahoma, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
