J. Wendell Roberts, 64, died March 29 at his Venice, Fla., home, The Courier-Journal reported Friday.
A Somerset, Ky., native, he had served as chief judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Kentucky before his retirement. Roberts was appointed to the bench in 1987 after spending 20 years in private practice as a Marion attorney. He served as chief judge of the bankruptcy court from 1988 to 1995 and left the bench in late 2001 at the end of his first 14-year term.

The Henderson-based electric cooperative was in the midst of a corruption scandal and $1 billion debt, according to the Courier-Journal.
