DECEMBER 25, 2003 ISSUE

Stone
MARION, Ky. ­ David Kent Stone, 45, died Dec. 21, 2003 at his home.
He is survived by a daughter, Jessica Watson of Salem; two sons, Jacob Stone and Woody Stone, both of Marion.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Dec. 26 at Gilbert Funeral Home. Rev. Tony Perryman will officiate. Gilbert Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Judes Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Hunter
SALEM, Ky. ­ William B. Hunter, 63, died Dec. 21, 2003 at his home.
Funeral services were held Dec. 23 at Boyd Funeral Home in Salem with Rev. Loyd Harris officiating. Burial was in Salem Cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Laura Ann Whitt of Marion; a son, Richard Reed of Salem; two half brothers, Elvis Null and J.B. Null, both of Marion; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas B. and Null Hunter; and one brother.

Byard
PRINCETON, Ky. ­ Wallace Byard, 90, died Dec. 18, 2003 at Caldwell County Hospital. He was retired from Cumberland Manufacturing and was of Baptist faith.
Surviving are a son, Richard Byard of Marion; three daughters, Zora Thomason and Betty Deboe, both of Princeton, and Sarah Ann Hanvey of Caldwell County; a sister, Adell Duckworth of Greenville, Texas; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Funeral services were held Dec. 21 at Morgan's Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Holeman and Bill Williams officiating. Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Hunt
Funeral services for James Denzil "Dink" Hunt, 81, of Marion, were held Dec. 24, 2003 at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville with Rev. Gary McAbee officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Hunt died Dec. 21. He was employed by Kentucky Utilities for 40 years, serving in Earlington then as manager of the Marion office. He was district manager in Dawson Springs and later in Greenville before retiring in 1987.
He was a member of the Greenville First Baptist Church where he was a deacon for 50 years. He was ordained in Earlington in 1953 and was a 50-year Mason. He was past president of the Rotary and Kiwanis clubs and the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, a past member of the Crittenden Hospital Board of Directors and the Marion City Council. He served on the Pennyroyal Mental Health Board where he received an outstanding service award at his retirement and served in the U.S. Coast Guard for four years in World War II.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Virginia Hunt of Greenville; a son, Stephen D. Hunt of Marion; and one granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by a brother.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Life Center of First Baptist Church in Greenville or to the American Cancer Society.

Shewmaker
Funeral services for Ruby Shewmaker, 98, of Marion, were held Dec. 20 at Gilbert Funeral Home. Pastor Jeff Williams and Pastor Joe Blagg officiated. Burial was in Love Cemetery.
Shewmaker died Dec. 18 at Crittenden County Convalescent Center. She was a member of New Covenant of Fellowship Church.
She was preceded in death by a sister; and five brothers. Her parents were Marion E. Shewmaker and Lula Martin Shewmaker.

Toth
SALEM, Ky. ­ Beulah C. Toth, 97, died Dec. 22, 2003 at Salem Springlake Care Center. Graveside services will be held Dec. 27, 2003 at Pleasant Grove Cemetery with Rev. Herbert Alexander officiating.
Surviving are a granddaughter, Margie Patterson Lake; a great-grandson; and two great-great-grandchildren, all of Monroe, Mich.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, James Albert Patterson, Sr. and John Toth; and a son, James Albert Patterson, Jr.. Her parents were Raymond and Maggie Belt.

Coffield
Venna L. Coffield, 98, of Marion, died Dec. 16, 2003 at Crittenden County Convalescent Center.
She was a member of Freewill Baptist Church, was a graduate of West Kentucky State College in Frankfort and taught school in Crittenden County for 41 years.
Surviving are two nieces, Gladys Joseph of Washington, D.C., and Doris Buckley of Springfield, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Grant and Lenna Coffield.
Funeral services were Dec. 22 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Dottie Bacon officiating. Burial was in Lewis Cemetery.

Starnes
JACKSONVILLE, Miss. ­ Albert Walker Starnes, Sr., 67, died Dec. 18, 2003.
He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Postal Service and was a life member of the V.F.W. Post #4548.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Judi Starnes of Jacksonville; a son, Al Starnes of Marion; four daughters, Debbie Crum, Karen Reed, Kay Baize and Billie Jo Loftus; a step-sister Roberta Cates; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Dec. 20, in the chapel of Moore's Jacksonville Funeral Home. Burial was in Chapel Hill Memorial Park.

Walton
Funeral services for Catherine Walton, 67, of Marion, were held Dec. 22, 2003 at Gilbert Funeral Home. Rev. Robert Phillips officiated. Burial was in Hurricane Cemetery.
Walton was a member of New Life Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Andy Walton of Marion and Roger Dale Walton of Paducah; a daughter, Betty L. Stone of Marion; three sisters, Minnie Lane of Marion, Dorothy Henson of Marion and Grace Wyatt of Jefferson, Ind.; a brother, Delmer Riley of Marion; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Travis
Shirley Travis, 81, of Marion, died Dec. 15, 2003 at St. John's Mercy Hospital in Pacific, Mo. Funeral services were Dec. 19 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Phillips officiating. Burial was in Sugar Grove Cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Linda Martin of Marion and Clara Nance of Pacific, Mo.; two sisters, Lucille Ainsworth of Moffat, Colo., and Lois Self of McMinniville, Tenn.; a brother, Frank Melton of Martinez, Ga.; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William J. and Mildred Ruth Melton.

Featherston
TAYLOR, Texas ­ Barbara Lou Featherston, 75, formerly of Mexico, Ky., died Dec. 15, 2003 at her home. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Taylor, Texas.
Survivors include her husband, Billy R. Featherston of Taylor; three sons, Billy R. Featherston, Jr., of Buchanan Dam, Texas, Robert Bruce Featherston of California and Ronald Brian Featherston of Minnesota; and several grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Avery and Christine Tabor.
Funeral services will be held Dec. 19 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Archie Brock officiating. Burial will be in Mexico Cemetery.

Skees
PRINCETON, Ky. ­ Louise C. Skees, 66, died Dec. 11, 2003 at Crittenden Hospital. She was a housewife and member of Gospel Temple Pentecostal Church in Princeton.
Funeral services were held Dec. 15 at Morgan's Funeral Home in Princeton with Bro. Mark Engler and Bro. Denzil Sizemore officiating. Burial was in Fredonia Cemetery.
Skees is survived by her husband, James M. Skees; two sons, Timmy Myers of Henderson and Michael Skees of Mexico; two daughters, Rachel Wilson and Libby Myers, both of Princeton; a brother, Rex McDaniel of Princeton; three sisters, Gertrude Gray, Jean Dorris and Christine Potter, all of Princeton; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, James Roy Myers; a daughter, Becky Walls; a great-grandson, Logan Murphy; three brothers, Russell McDaniel, Charles McDaniel and Louard McDaniel; and three sisters, Myrtle Gillian, Tyline Moore and Arnella Gillian. Her parents were Cordie Cook and Camella Jones McDaniel.

Gipson-Stoner
CHEYENNE, Wyo. ­ Susan Denise "Toni" Gipson-Stoner, 38, died Dec. 7, 2003 at United Medical Center-West.
She was born in Marion and had lived in Cheyenne for eight years.
She is survived by a daughter, Devin Lewis; her father, Stanley Gipson; her mother, Marilyn Shewmaker; two brothers, Michael Gipson and Greg Gipson; and a sister Loetta Sill, all of Kentucky.
Cremation took place through Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes in Cheyenne.

Bass
SMITHLAND, Ky. ­ Encil Bass, 78, of Smithland, died Dec. 10, 2003 at Lourdes Hospital. He was an Army veteran serving in World War I.
Survivors include a brother, Carl L. Bass of Bandana, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ollie J. Bass and Mattie L. Cook Bass; and two brothers, Willie T. Bas and Lonnie Hodge.
A memorial service was held Dec. 12 at Boyd Funeral Home in Salem. Burial was in Tyner's Chapel Cemetery.

EDDYVILLE, Ky. ­ Jerline Joyce Boyd, 65, died Dec. 5, 2003 at Caldwell County Hospital.
Funeral services were held Dec. 6 at Lakeland Funeral Home in Eddyville with Rev. Joe Farless and Rev. Terry Davis officiating. Burial was in Hebron Cemetery in Lyon County.
Boyd was a retired surgical technician for Caldwell County Hospital in Princeton with 45 years of service and was a member of Hebron Baptist Church in Lyon County.
Surviving are a daughter, Beth Pierce of Dawson Springs; two brothers, Goble Joyce of Marion and Art Joyce of Eddyville; two sisters, Betty Kemper of Kuttawa and Faye Stinnett of Dycusburg; and one granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Linzy; two brothers, Randy Joyce and Owen Joyce; and her parents, Lelan Joyce and Stella Peek Joyce.

Walker
Orbie K. Walker, 85, of Marion, died Dec. 4, 2003 at his home. He was a member of Baker Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Thelma Newcom and Della Mae Thomas, both of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eloise Brown Walker; and his parents, John T. and Clara Walker.
Graveside services were held Dec. 6 at Rosebud Cemetery with Rev. Robert Phillips and Rev. Jimmy Cowan officiating. Arrangements were made by Gilbert Funeral Home.

Noel

SALEM, Ky. ­ Funeral services for Gene Noel, 31, 2003 will be held at 1 p.m., Dec. 4 at Boyd Funeral Chapel. Rev. Lester Joyce will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery.
Noel died Dec. 1 at Livingston Hospital.
Surviving are his fiance, Aleshia Howard of Salem; a daughter, Jalaine Sueann Noel of Salem; a twin brother, Teddy Noel of Hendersonville, N.C.; six sisters, Karen Sprague of Ledbetter, Connie Johnson of Salem, Gaye Lynch of Grand Rivers, Donna Jackson and faye McDowell, both of Marion and Kim Noel of Lexington Park, Md.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Elaine Trail Noel; a sister, Janet Jalaine Noel and a nephew, David Johnson.

Keith
POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. ­ Florence Keith, 64, formerly of Marion, died Dec. 2, 2003 at Three Rivers Healthcare North. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Dec. 4 at Gilbert Funeral Home. Rev. Robert Phillips will officiate. Burial will be in McMican Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Bob Keith of Poplar Bluff; a son, Steven Keith of Poplar Bluff; four brothers, Elmer and Dennis Holloman, both of Marion; Willie Holloman of Hammond, Ind., and Joe Holloman of Poplar Bluff; three sisters, Shelby Fritts and Jerri Curry, both of Poplar Bluff; and Betty Corley of Marion; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Lorene Holloman.

Hunt
Marvin Hunt, 66, of Marion, died Dec. 1, 2003 at West Kentucky Veteran's Center in Hanson. He was a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Hunt; a stepdaughter, Shannon Stout; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Hunt; and his father, Eston "Buck" Hunt.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Dec. 4 at Gilbert Funeral Home with burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
O'Nan
Betty O'Nan, 75, of Marion, formerly of Booneville, Ind., died Nov. 29, 2003 at her home. She was a member of the Marion United Methodist Church, the Crittenden County Hospital Auxiliary and was a retired farmer and licensed beautician.
She is survived by three sons, Jimmy "Ree" O'Nan of Burna, David O'Nan of Salem and Jon O'Nan of Lola; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph D. O'Nan; a sister; a brother; and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Miller.
Graveside services were held Dec. 2 at Hackelman Cemetery in Reo, Ind., with Rev. Wayne Garvey officiating. Arrangements were handled by Boyd Funeral Home.

Gipson
Funeral services for Robert Henry Gipson, 78, of Marion, were held Dec. 3, 2003 at Gilbert Funeral Home. Rev. Mark Faughn officiated. Burial was in Love Cemetery.
Gipson died Nov. 30 at Salem Springlake Care Center. He was a member of Marion Church of God. He served the U.S. Army in World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Shelby Gipson of Marion; two sons, Rickey Wayne Gipson and Ronald Wade Gipson, both of Marion; a daughter, Barbara Jo Gipson of Marion; a brother, George Gipson of Marion and several nieces and nephews.

Guess
SALEM, Ky. ­ Mary E. Guess, 87, died Nov. 27, 2003 at Salem Springlake Care Center. She was a member of Maranatha Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Ronnie Guess of Burna; and a daughter, Janetta Jackson of Burna; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse A. Guess; a daughter, Lona M. Peck; a son, Jesse R. Guess; and her parents, Francis M. and Addie Duncan Doom.

Phelps
Betty Lou Phelps, 70, of Marion, died Nov. 26, 2003 at her home. Funeral services were Nov. 30 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Phillips officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Surviving are a son, Bob Phelps of Evansville; two daughters, Brenda Phelps of Portage, Ind., and Debra Graham of Tell City, Ind.; two sisters, Sara Ritzert and Wanda Jones, both of Evansville; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl "Eulls" Phelps.

Arflack

LOLA, Ky. ­ Funeral services for Rosemary Arflack, 58, were held Nov. 26, 2003 at Boyd Funeral Home. Rev. Tim Fouts and Rev. Mike Grimes officiated. Burial was in Lola Pentecostal Cemetery.
Arflack died Nov. 24 at Lourdes Hospital. She attended Lola Pentecostal Church.

Lloyd
EVANSVILLE, Ind. ­ Services for Nellie Ryan Lloyd, 92, formerly of Salem, were held Nov. 22, 2003 at Boone Funeral Home in Evansville with entombment in Park Lawn Mausoleum-Georgian Chapel in Evansville.
Lloyd died Nov. 19 at Woodland Convalescent Center in Newburg. She was born in Livingston County, attended Salem High School and graduated from Western Kentucky Teachers College in 1933 before teaching for a few years in Livingston County.
She is survived by two sons, John B. Lloyd of Newburg, Ind., and Robert Lee Lloyd of Aurora, Colo.; a daughter, Sandra Thompson of Evansville; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Lloyd; and a brother, Joseph B. Ryan, Jr. Her parents were Joseph Burnett Ryan, Sr., and Jennie Parker Ryan.

Hurley
SMITHLAND, Ky. ­ Don Ray Hurley, 57, died Nov. 21, 2003 at Lourdes Hospital. He died as a result of injuries suffered in a car accident near Hampton.
He was a member of Local 181 Operating Engineers of Paducah.
Funeral services were held Nov. 24 at Boyd Funeral Home with Rev. Billy Hurley officiating. Burial was in Carrsville Cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Peggy McDowell Hurley of Smithland; a son, Nick Hurley of Burna; a daughter, Jina Whyte of Smithland; his mother, Mildred Hurley of Carrsville; two brothers, Deon Hurley and Dwayne Hurley, both of Carrsville; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Devenous Hurley.

Ingala
PADUCAH, Ky. ­ Josephine Ingala, 88, died Nov. 22, 2003 at Crittenden Hospital. No local services are planned. Burial was in Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury, NY. Boyd Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas Ingala of Salem and Joseph Ingala of Springhill, Fla.; a brother, Michael Cowell of Brooklyn, NY; four sisters, Rose Crino of Hampton Bays, NY, Jeanne Tedesco of Florida, Margie Coluzzi of Staton Island, NY and Millie Johnson of California; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters; a brother; her husband, Anthony Ingala; and her parents, Joseph and Antonia Zaxarro Cowell.

Drake
Anna Drake, 67, of Marion, died Nov. 20, 2003 at Crittenden County Convalescent Center. Graveside services were held Nov. 23 at Mapleview Cemetery with Rev. Robert Phillips officiating. Gilbert Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She was a member of Marion Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Debbie Carter and Melissa Drake, both of Marion; a son, Danny Drake of Marion; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cletus "Buddy" Drake; a brother; a sister; and her parents Walter and Osie Watson.

Lynn
Daniel J. Lynn, 88, of Marion, died Nov. 21, 2003 at Salem Springlake Care Center. He was a member of Hurricane Church.
Funeral services were Nov. 23 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Phillips officiating. Burial was in Love Cemetery.
Survivors include a son, Danny J. Lynn of Marion; a daughter, Anna Duncan of Marion; two brothers, Richard Lynn of Evansville and James Lynn of Hopkinsville; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Belva Fern Lynn; and three sisters.

OWENSBORO, Ky. ­ Funeral services for Eugene L. Hodge, 94, formerly of Marion, were held Nov. 16, 2003 at Union Baptist Church with Rev. A.C. Hodge officiating. Burial was in Union Cemetery. Gilbert Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Hodge died Nov. 13 at Hillcrest Healthcare Center in Owensboro. He was a member of Union Baptist Church, a 50-year member of Bigham Masonic Lodge No. 256 in Marion and a 50-year member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters.
Surviving are his wife, Ruby Hodge of Marion; two daughters, Greta H. Hodge of Owensboro and Judith H. Shawn of Knoxville; three stepsons, Kenneth Arflack of Madison, Ala., Bruce Arflack of Ft. Worth, Texas and Carl Arflack of Missouri; a stepdaughter, Carolyn Hodge of Clarksville; a sister, Elexzena Love of Lithonia, Ga.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Hughes Hodge; his second wife, Carroll Graves Hodge; and a son, Larry G. Hodge.

Boone
Daniel M. Boone, 84, of Marion, died Nov. 18, 2003 at Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado, Ill. He was a member of VFW and Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Margaret Alderdice of Eddyville and Elaine Stalion of Marion; a son, Danny Boone of Marion; two brothers, James Boone of Marion and William Boone of Irving, Texas; a sister, Rebecca Wilson of Owensboro; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a son, David Boone; and a great-grandchild. His parents were W.O. and Lola Boone.
Funeral services are Nov. 22 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Cortis Hill officiating. Burial will be in Piney Fork Cemetery.

Clement
Cleta Lee Clement,93, of Marion, died Nov. 15, 2003 at her home. She was a member of Crayne U.S.A. Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are her daughter, Gwendolyn York of Fredonia; a stepdaughter, Janet Pfipsen of Fort Collins Colo.; a sister, Marguerite Campbell of St. Petersburg, Fla; three grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Nov. 18 at Chapel Hill Cemetery with Rev. Cortis Hill officiating. Gilbert Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Grimes
Vivian Grimes, 84, of Marion, died Nov. 15, 2003 at Crittenden County Convalescent Center.
She is survived by a son, J.D. Grimes of Marion; a daughter, Jessica Wyatt of Marion; and one grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse W. Grimes; and two great-grandsons Joshua and Noah Grimes.
Funeral services were held Nov. 17 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Baker officiating. Burial was in Mapleview Cemetery.

Owen
CENTRALIA, Ill. ­ Funeral services for Eva M. Owen, 80, were held Nov. 16, 2003 at Irvin Funeral Home with Rev. Alan Redfern officiating. Burial was in Doom Chapel Cemetery in Eddyville.
Owen was a member of Eternity Baptist Church and the church's senior group.
She is survived by two sons, Danny Owen of Centralia and Rev. Charles Owen of Louisville; two daughters, Donna Redfern of Pontoon Beach, Ill., and Rhonda Gifford of Harrisburg, Ill.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles William Owen. The couple married in Marion in 1940. Her parents were Perce and Etta Asbridge Travis.

Driver
KUTTAWA, Ky. ­ Wilma Driver, 85, formerly of Fredonia, died Nov. 11, 2003 at Riversbend Retirement Center. Funeral services were Nov. 14 at Morgan's Funeral Home with Rev. Willard Walls and Rev. Harold Craven officiating. Burial was in Fredonia Cemetery.
She was a member of Fredonia Pentecostal Church in Fredonia.
She is survived by two sons, Johnny Driver and Leroy Driver, both of Fredonia; four daughters, Barbara Jackson and Carrie Stoltenburg, both of Eddyville, Velda Johnson of Princeton and Delores Frost of Fredonia; 25 grandchildren; and 47 great-grandchildren.

Chittenden was a graduate of Western Kentucky State College and taught in the Livingston County school system for 15 years before joining the staff of Salem Bank. She retired from banking after 35 years. She was secretary of the Salem Hospital Board, a member of the Order of Eastern Star and was active in the Kentucky Women Bankers organization.
Surviving are a niece, Linda Munson of Louisville; a nephew, Roe Vaughn of Birmingham; two great-nieces; and a great-nephew.

Cooper
Graveside services for Roy Nevall Cooper, 84, of Marion, were held Oct. 1, 2003 at Lola Cemetery. Cooper died Sept. 28 at Crittenden Hospital. Rev. Robert Phillips officiated.
Cooper was the postmaster at Lola Post Office for 34 years and was owner/operator of Coopers Grocery. He was a charter member of Marion Country Club. He served as a Cpl.1st Class in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II where he was engaged in the South Pacific campaign including Guadalcanal, New Britain, Tarawa, Saipan and Iwo Jima.
Cooper's 10th Marine battalion (Forgotten Battalion) 2nd Marine Division received commendations for close artillery support during the invasion of Guadalcanal and received recognition for participating in more major campaigns over a shorter period of time than any battalion in the Marine Corps. Cpl. Cooper was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement during offensive operations against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Newcom Cooper of Marion; a daughter, Cathie Jean Cooper Champion of Paducah; two stepsons, Jerry Hill of Las Vegas and Johnny Hill of Martinsville, Ind.; a brother, Art Cooper of Marion; a sister, Alma Lumas of Tyler, Texas; two grandchildren; four step grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.

She was born June 28, 1924 in Mexico, Ky., to the late Vernon E. and Ruby Cruce Hodge. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Gerald W. Hodge.
Sterling was a bookkeeper up until she retired in 2001 and a member of Faith Assembly of God in Conway.
Survivors include her husband William F. Sterling; a daughter, Judith A. Herzog of Malibu, Calif; a son, Richard Davis of Conway; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Jean Waterloo of Little Rock, Joan Carver of Las Vegas, Arlene Luster of Texas; two brothers, Vernon Hodge of Ocala, Fla, Don F. Hodge of Marion; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Sept. 16 at Faith Assembly of God Church in Conway with Rev. Roger D. Mattox officiating. Burial was Sept. 17 at Mapleview Cemetery in Marion.

SALEM, Ky. ­ Delores Juanita Potter Steele Stratton, 70, died Sept. 15, 2003 at Crittenden Hospital. She was a member of Grace Missionary Baptist Church in Marion.

CARRSVILLE, Ky. ­ N.S. "Sally" Karr, 93, died Sept. 15, 2003 at his home. He was a member of Pipefitters Local 184 in Paducah and Carrsville Methodist Church.

She was a member of Highland Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she was presented with a perpetual membership in the Cumberland Presbyterian Women Association. She was a lifetime member of the Goldwing Motorcycle Association, Chapter B of Paducah.

PADUCAH, Ky. ­ Eldon Ray James, 83, died Sept. 7, 2003 at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah. He is a former Marion resident.
He was a pilot in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was retired from Union Carbide after 29 years. He was a member of New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church and PACE International Local 50550.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Marcia York James of Paducah; three sons, Hollis Gregory James of Fulton, Eldon Franklin James of Columbia, Mo., and John Taylor James of Paducah; and five grandchildren.

SITKA, Alaska ­ Joan Terry Comerford, 87, died Aug. 31, 2003. Born on her family's farm in Crittenden County, she was educated at Western Kentucky University and taught in the public schools of Crittenden County, Tenn., Arizona and from 1946 until retirement in Alaska. From 1955 through 1960, she was director of curriculum for the Alaska Territorial Department of Education.
She is survived by her brother, T. Rankin Terry, of Ft. Myers, Florida, two nieces, two nephews, one grand niece and one grand nephew.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin A.J. Comerford, her parents, W.L. and Sadie Rankin Terry, a brother, William Lester Terry, Jr., and two sisters, Virginia Wineland and Katherine Moore.
A memorial service is planned at the Haines Presbyterian Church in Haines, Alaska on Sept. 6.

Martha Louise Biggs, 81, of Marion, died Aug. 29, 2003 at Crittenden County Convalescent Center. She was a member of the Marion United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his a brother, Charles Doom; a son, James M. Doom, Jr.; and a stepdaughter, Diane Brown.

BURNA, Ky. ­ Donna Ramage, 53, died Aug. 1, 2003 at Livingston Hospital. She was a registered nurse at Livingston Hospital and was instrumental in bringing Advanced Life Support to Livingston County Ambulance Service.
She is survived by her husband, Phillip Ramage of Burna; two sons, Dennie Ramage of Paducah and Kevin Ramage of Burna; a daughter, Kaysie Yaw of Hampton; three brothers, Bobby Long of Marion, Eddie Long of Perkin, Ill, and Larry Long of Salem; three sisters, Marilyn Fennell of Nokesville, Va., Judy Donnelson of Souix City, Iowa and Rita Long of Calvert City; and one grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Elsie Whorton Long.

Frances Brown, 63, of Marion, died July 28, 2003 at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah. She was a member of Emmaus Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Chester Brown of Marion; two sons, Steve Brown of Marion and Terry W. Brown of Franklin; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Adger and Betty Bass Howard.

Barnes
Funeral services for George Henry Barnes, 82, of Marion, were held July 27, 2003 at Gilbert Funeral Home. Rev. Robert Barnes and Rev. Darrell Clarke officiated. Burial was in Pinckneyville Cemetery.
Barnes died July 24 at Salem Springlake Care Center. He was a member and deacon of Marion Baptist Church and a member of Liberty Lodge in Frances.
He is survived by his wife, Mona Barnes of Marion; two sons, Robert Barnes and Kevin Barnes of the Cincinnati area; a daughter, Joye Hunt of Evansville; four grandsons; and two granddaughters.

Nelson
SALEM, Ky. ­ Tula Nelson, 77, died July 24, 2003 at River's Bend Retirement Community. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a son, Robert Howard of Grand Rivers; a sister, Mildred Hurley of Carrsville; two brothers, Trice McDonald of Salem and Alvin McDonald of Carrsville; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Cleo Duvall, 88, of Marion, died July 26, 2003 at her home in the Mexico community. She was a member of Sulphur Springs Baptist Church.

Duvall is survived by five sons, Charles Duvall of Marion, Robert Duvall of Longview, Texas, Doug Duvall of Madisonville and Steve Duvall and Larry Duvall, both of Portage, Ind.; two daughters, Brenda Hodges of Kuttawa and Jan Duvall of Lombard, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Duvall; a grandson, Mike Duvall; and her parents, Ervin and Muriel Wring Jones.

PADUCAH, Ky. ­ Norma Nichols, 67, died July 27, 2003 at her home. She was a homemaker and member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Rushing
FREDONIA, Ky. ­ Funeral services for Maudline Rushing, 83, were held July 28, 2003 at Morgan's Funeral Home in Princeton. Rev. Tommy Tackett officiated, assisted by Rev. David Royalty officiated. Burial was in Fredonia Cemetery.
Rushing died July 25 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church and was a retired painter at Shawnee Plastics.

OWENSBORO, Ky. ­ Mable Tobin, 90, formerly of Marion, died July 17, 2003 at Owensboro Mercy Hospital. She was a member of Third Baptist Church in Owensboro and a former member of Marion Baptist Church. She was a former member and treasurer of the Woman's Club of Marion, a member of WMU at Marion Baptist Church and the former owner of Tobin Tourtel in Marion.
Surviving are two daughters, Jean Carol Stone and Nancy Hurst, both of Owensboro; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was survived by her husband, William N. Tobin; and a brother.

Jesse Louis Williams, 73, of Marion, formerly of Marengo, Ill., died July 21, 2003 at Livingston Hospital.
He was a former commander of the VFW Post in Providence. He was a member of the American Legion in Marengo, Ill. He was former owner of Williams' Grocery and Garage in Mattoon.
He is survived by four daughters, Esther Whithead of Arkansas, Arlene Stephens of Caldwell County, Jessica Lowery of Marion and Patricia Volkommer of Woodstock, Ill.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Nellie Williams; three brothers; and a sister.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Robert Brooks. Her parents were Grady and Lucille Sisco.

PRINCETON, Ky. ­ Funeral services for Martha A. Driver, 94, formerly of Fredonia, will be held at 1 p.m., July 24, 2003 at Morgan's Funeral Home in Princeton. Burial will be in Fredonia Cemetery.
Driver died July 22 at Princeton Health Care Manor. She is was of the Baptist faith and was a retired restaurant worker.
She is survived by a sister, Leora Landers of Marion; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Driver; a son, Ruble Driver; five brothers; and four sisters. Her parents were Jake and Nonia Fralix Cummings.

O'Leary
Nina Ruth O'Leary, 91, of Marion, died July 18, 2003 at Crittenden County Convalescent Center. She was a member of Emmaus Baptist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Mary Jane James of Marion; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin O'Leary; five brothers, Rueben Peek, Robert Peek, Richard Peek, Bill Peek and Hubert Peek. Her parents were Ed and Birdie Travis Peek.

Shaffer

Shaffer died July 16 at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah.

Willard Vaughn, 56, of Marion, died July 14, 2003 at Crittenden County Convalescent Center. Vaughn was a common fixture on benches outside the Crittenden County Courthouse for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Freda Vaughn of Marion; two brothers, Doug Vaughn and Daniel Vaughn.

SALEM, Ky. ­ Lucy Hardin Yates, 89, died July 15, 2003 at Crittenden Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Emma Cobb Hardin; three sisters; a grandson; three great-grandchildren; and a daughter, Frances Parrish.

CRETE, IL ­ Donal F. Joiner, 70, formerly of Lyon County, died June 26, 2003 at St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights, Ill.
He was a member of Victory Hill Baptist Church in Steger, Ill. He was a U.S. Army veteran, and a member of Local #1252 International Brotherhood of Boilermakers and Blacksmiths.
He is survived by a daughter, Cindy Joiner; two sons, Don Joiner and Ron Joiner, all of Crete, Ill.; a brother, Wilson Joiner of Eddyville; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Brown Joiner; a daughter, Patty LaJean Joiner; and his parents.

Floyd Oliver Gross, 81, of Marion, died June 28, 2003 at Salem Springlake Care Center. He was captain of Caldwell Springs Fire Department, a member of the Masonic Lodge and was retired from Edison Electric.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou Gross of Marion three daughters, Mary Lou Spindler of Marion, Theresa Ruth Baker of Dyersburg, Tenn., and Barbara Lynn Driver of Fredonia; a son, William Harold Gross of Indiana; a sister, Lois Marjorie Maloney of Chicago; eight grandchildren; several foster grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
