Jackson

SCOTTS COUNTY, Mo. ­ Irene Jackson, 80, formerly of Tolu, died June 11, 2003.
She is survived by her daughter, Jeanette Mercier; a son, Wayne Jackson; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Her parents were Bessie and Lewis Barnes.
Services were held in Forest Lawn Mortuary in Covina Hills, Calif.

Riley
DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. ­ Clarla A. Riley, 84, formerly of Crittenden County, died June 17, 2003 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.
She is survived by a son, Sherman Woodall of Michigan; a daughter, Margaret Dixon of Allen Park, Mich.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were June 20 at White's Chapel Church with Bro. David Winders officiating. Burial was in White's Chapel Cemetery. Boyd Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Smiley
PADUCAH, Ky. ­ George H. Smiley, 82, died June 19, 2003 at Western Baptist Hospital.
He was a member of Reidland United Methodist Church, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was retired from TVA after 43 years of service as a power operator.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Norman Smiley of Paducah; a daughter, Pamela S. Earon of Metropolis, Ill.; a son, George H. Smiley III of Connecticut; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister. His parents were George H. Smiley and Ethel Murphy Smiley.
Funeral services were held June 23 at Boyd Funeral Chapel with Bro. Charles Pitman and Bro. Richard Carruth officiating. Burial was in Salem Cemetery.

Hunt
Dorothy Hunt, 69, of Marion, died June 20, 2003 at her home. She was a member of Marion First Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are her husband, Marvin Hunt of Marion; a daughter, Shannon Stout of Marion; a sister, Genevieve Simpkins of Nashville; two half sisters, Louise Cline of Marion and Helen Harper of Fredonia; and a half brother, Leslie Davis of Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Robert Thomas and her parents, Ernest and Janette Brown.
Funeral services were June 23 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Ray Latham officiating. Burial was in Mapleview Cemetery.

Jones

FREDONIA, Ky. ­ Esta Marie Jones, 83, died June 15, 2003 at Caldwell County Hospital. She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness in Marion.
Surviving are her husband of 55 years, James T. Jones of Fredonia; two sons, John Pollock of Akron, Ohio and Jimmy D. Jones of Newburg, Ind.; three daughters, Barbara Meredith of Eddyville, Sandra Joiner of Alexander City, Ala., and Mary Faulkner of Kenton, Del.; a sister, Mildred Summers of Clarksburg, W.Va.; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by eight brothers and one sister. Her parents were Clyde "Lydie" and Ann Agner Summers.
Funeral services were held June 18 at Dunn's Funeral Home in Eddyville with Dean Sharp officiating. Burial was in Dycusburg Cemetery.

Davidson
Russell E. Davidson, 93, of Marion, died June 11, 2003 at Crittenden Hospital. He was a 65-year member of Union Baptist Church and a 50-year member of Salem Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie Alsobrook Davidson of Marion; two sisters, Velda Drake of Salem and Ruby Wring of Bardstown; a brother, Kenneth Davidson of Memphis.
Funeral services were June 14 at Boyd Funeral Home with Rev. A.C. Hodge officiating. Burial was in Union Cemetery.

Spaulding
BURNA, Ky. ­ Susan Spaulding, 39, died June 8, 2003 in Chicago, Ill.
She is survived by two sons, Joshua Spaulding and Jonathan Spaulding, both of Salem.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cyrus "Buck" Spaulding.
A memorial service was held June 15 at Faith Pentecostal Tabernacle in Salem with Bro. Phillip Sanders officiating.

Moore
Richard "Dick" Moore, 85, of Marion, died June 10, 2003 at Life Care Nursing Home of LaCenter.
He was a member of Marion United Methodist Church and retired from Moore Business Forms after 30-plus years.
Funeral services were held June 12 at Gilbert Funeral Home. Burial was in Mapleview Cemetery.

Howard
Shelby M. Howard, 76, of Marion, died June 10, 2003 at Crittenden Hospital. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army's 11th Airborne. He retired from U.S. Steele after 33 years. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Surviving are five daughters, Sonja Howard of Nashville, Cassandra Jacobs of Frankfort, Shelia (Brad) Foster of Rochester, NY, Elaine (Dennis) Adkins of Grayslake, Ill., and Alicia (Vince) Clark of Marion; 12 grandchildren, Dr. Stephanie Roney, Joyce Ponder, Robert Hendrickson, Carey Ketchum, Dennis Bryan Adkins, Christopher and Ashlee Jacobs, Perry, Andrew and Charlotte Foster and Dylan and Devin Clark; two brothers, Don Howard of Benham, Ky., and Harold Howard of Cumberland; five sisters, Emilou Ison of Corbin, Marilyn Boggs, Elsie Watts and Margaret Collins, all of Cumberland, and Evelyn Lawson of Indianapolis; several nieces and nephews and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Fayle Joyce Howard; and a brother, Willard Howard. His parents were Berry and Flora Howard.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., June 13 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Frank McCallum officiating. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m., June 12 at Gilbert Funeral Home. Burial will be in Shady Grove Cemetery.

McClure
Bonnie Ruth McClure, 75, of Marion, died June 10, 2003 at Salem Springlake Care Center. She attended Frances Presbyterian Church and was retired from Hicks Dollar Store.
Surviving are a daughter, Karen Lowery of Marion; a son, Douglas W. McClure of Indian Mound, Tenn.; two sisters, Lois Phillips and Janice Bebout, both of Marion; a brother, Paul "Tittle" Ryan of Kuttawa; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Northern McClure; and two sisters.

Dalton

FREDONIA, Ky. ­ William L. Dalton, 59, died June 1, 2003 at Crittenden Hospital. He was a welder and retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service. He served in the Vietnam War and was a member of the VFW in Princeton and the American Legion in Fredonia.
Funeral services were held June 3 at Morgan's Funeral Home in Princeton with Rev. Marilyn Williams officiating. Burial was in Norman Cemetery in Caldwell County.
Surviving are his mother, Juanita Rushing Wallace of Fredonia; a son, William L. Dalton, Jr., of Jessup, Ga.; a daughter, Angela Dalton of Jessup; and a brother, James Clifford Dalton, Sr., of Marion.
He was preceded in death by his father, Albert Marvin Dalton.

Clifton Ray Belt, 56, of Marion, died May 30, 2003 at Crittenden Hospital. He was a member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church and a heavy equipment operator and member of Local 181.
Surviving are two sons, George B. Belt of Benton and Stephen R. Belt of Marion; two sisters, Ava Lois Belt and Vivian Workman, both of Marion; two brothers, Aubrey R. Belt and Sylvan Belt, both of Marion; his mother, Ava Ruth Belt of Marion; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jewell A. Belt.

McKinney
Funeral services for Dora Ellen McKinney, 83, of Marion, were held June 1 at Gilbert Funeral Home. Sister Lucy Tedrick officiated with burial in Carrsville Cemetery.
McKinney died May 30, 2003 at Crittenden Hospital.
Survivors include a son, Danny McKinney of Madisonville; three daughters, Janice Gibbs of Evansville, Ruby Driver of Carrsville and Peggy Cox of Angleton, Texas; a sister, Catherine Champion of Marion; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J.D. McKinney; two sons, Jimmy McKinney and Joseph McKinney; two grandsons, Roy Dale Driver and Timmy Lanham; two brothers; and three sisters.

McDonald
Joe McDonald, 67, of Marion, died June 3, 2003 at his home. He was a 33-year employee of Ingram Materials and attended Deer Creek Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be June 5 at Boyd Funeral Home with Bro. Jamie Baker officiating. Burial will be in Carrsville Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Verna Workman McDonald of Marion; a daughter, Becky Franklin of Marion; a son, Tony McDonald of Marion; two brothers, Trice McDonald of Salem and Alvin McDonald of Carrsville; and two sisters, Tula Nelson of Salem and Mildred Hurley of Carrsville; and four grandchildren.

Juanita Joyce "Dink" Nesbitt Bebout, 71, of Marion, died May 30, 2003 at her home. She was a member of Mexico Baptist Church and Woodmen of the World.

George Winn, 68, of Marion, died May 23, 2003 at Crittenden Hospital. He was the retired owner of Marion Machine Works, which he purchased in 1973. He was a former director of The Peoples Bank in Marion; he was a National Director of Jaycees; and was named outstanding director of U.S. Jaycees. He was a member of Marion Baptist Church, where he was a deacon; and a member of the Crittenden County Chamber of Commerce.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Winn of Marion; two sisters, Glenda Donohoo of Frankfort, Ky., and Vonelle Sturgeon of Salem; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were May 26 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Dr. Darrell Clarke officiating. Burial was in Mapleview Cemetery.

Zula Brown Tabor, 84, of Marion, died May 23, 2003 at Caldwell County Hospital. She was a member of Marion Baptist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. ­ Sarah F. Yates, 102, died May 22, 2003 at Southwood Nursing Home. She was born in Marion. She was a member of Gospel Tabernacle Church.
She is survived by a son, James Yates of Terre Haute; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Yates; and a son, Paris C. Yates. Her parents were John and Anna Floyd of Marion.

MERRIT ISLAND, Fla. ­ Charles Ray Watson, 53, formerly of Marion, died May 21, 2003 at Cape Canaveral Hospital.
Survivors include two daughters, Rachel Frazer and Tina Gannon, both of Merritt Island; two sons, Ray Watson of Mayfield and Donnie Watson of Marion; four stepchildren of Merritt Island; a sister, Shirley Kirk of Marion; three brothers, Jerry Watson, James Watson and Ronnie Watson, all of Cocoa, Fla.; three grandchildren; and eight step grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Jesse Wayne Watson of New Burn, N.C.; and his parents, Jessie and Pearl Watson of Marion.

Robert Brown, 79, of Marion, died May 23, 2003 at Rivers Bend Nursing Home in Kuttawa. Funeral services were May 24 at Gilbert Funeral Home with burial in Freedom Cemetery.
Survivors include a daughter, Donna Jarvis of Symsonia; a sister, Bonnie Prowell of Marion; and two grandchildren.

PRINCETON, Ky. ­ Opal Neisz Stallins, 77, died May 17, 2003 at Jeannie Stuart Medical Center in Hopkinsville. She was a retired school teacher and member of White Sulphur Baptist Church.

PRINCETON, Ky. ­ Funeral services for Roy Guess, 79, were held Monday at Morgan's Funeral Home in Princeton. Rev. Jim Stahr and Rev. J. Bill Jones officiated. Burial was in Mapleview Cemetery in Marion.
Guess was a member of Central Presbyterian Church in Princeton, Bigham Masonic Lodge in Marion and the Shriners. He was president of Guess Trucking and Construction Company. He died May 16, 2003 at Caldwell County Hospital.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Stone Guess of Princeton; a son, Dr. C.W. Guess of Union City, Tenn.; a daughter, Serita Jaggers of Caldwell County; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charley and Thelma Wood Guess; a brother, Charles Winford "Winkie" Guess.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy Johnson Kemper of Tolu; a son, David Kemper of Norris City, Ill.; a daughter, Renee Sizemore of Marion; his mother Helen Hamilton Kemper of Tolu; and a brother, Bill Kemper of Tolu; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Millard "Boss" Kemper.

CAPE CORAL, Fla. ­ Elton E. Brasher, 63, died April 25, 2003 at his home. He was born in Marion.
He is survived by his wife, Rose Brasher of Cape Coral; two daughters, Terry Cox of Valparaiso, Ind., and Melissa Cundiff of Hobart, Ind.; three step- daughters, Diane Myers of Schereville, Ind., JoAnn Vittoria of Lemont, Ill., and Linda Firestone of Indianapolis, Ind.; two stepsons, Scott Zimmer of Chesterton, Ind., and Nick Million of Griffith, Ind.; a sister, Carolyn Brightwell of Marion; and 14 grandchildren.
He was buried April 29 at Lee Memorial Park Cemetery in Leigh-Acres, Fla.

Binkley
SALEM, Ky. ­ Funeral services for Marie Binkley, 96, were held May 17, 2003 at Boyd Funeral Chapel in Salem. Rev. E.J. Hatton officiated. Burial was in Salem Cemetery.
Binkley died May 14 at her home. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church and the retired teachers association. She was a 60-year member of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are a daughter, Juanita Beard of Campbellsville; a brother, Paul Campbell of Campbellsville; and several nieces and nephews.

SALEM, Ky. ­ Marjorie Layman, 93, died May 14, 2003 at Crittenden County Convalescent Center. She was a member of Bell's Mines Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Crittenden County.
She is survived by a nephew, Harry P. Rudolph of Salem; and two great-nephews.
Her parents were Jefferson Davis and Bertha Hina Layman. She was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.

Babb
MADISONVILLE, Ky. ­ William Marion "Bill" Babb, 82, died May 20, 2003 at NHC Healthcare in Madisonville.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers. His parents were Orbie Lee and Effie Elizabeth Todd Babb.
He was a retired truck driver for Ruby Concrete Co. He was a Kentucky Colonel, a life member of VFW Post 5480, American Legion Post No. 6 and Forty and Eight. He was a World War II veteran.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Charles Clark Babb of Madisonville; a daughter Marian Baucum of Dawson Springs; two sons, Robert E. "Bob" Babb and Phillip Babb, both of Madisonville; a brother, Robert F. Babb of Madisonville; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., May 23 at Barnett-Strother Funeral Home with Rev. Chester Cannon officiating. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Madisonville.

Quertermous
LOLA, Ky. ­ Katie Quertermous, 84, died May 19, 2003 at Crittenden Hospital. She was a member of Hopewell Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Beverly Belt of Lola and Geraldine Grimes of Salem; two sons, Paul "Dickie" Quertermous of Lola and William Russell Quertermous of Owensboro; two sisters, Mildred Kimberlin of Salem and Melva Gibbs of Florida; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Quertermous; a grandson; a brother; a sister; and her parents, Russell and Edna Cash Monroe.

James Hayden McConnell, 65, of Marion, died May 7, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville. He was a member of Marion Baptist Church, Bigham Masonic Lodge #256, the Eastern Star Chapter 135 and was a Crittenden County Magistrate.
He is survived by his wife, Helen McConnell of Marion; two daughters, Darlene McLaughlin and Charlene Walker, both of Marion; three sons, Mike McConnell and Billy McConnell, both of Marion, and Gary McConnell of Providence; two sisters, Irene Decker of Marion and Inez Rowland of Rensselaer, Ind.; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Jean Horning Leslie, 77, of Marion, died May 4, 2003 at her home. She was a member of Marion Baptist Church.

McConnell
Hayden McConnell, 65, of Marion, died May 7, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville.
Arrangements were incomplete at Gilbert Funeral Home Wednesday morning.
He served as a Crittenden County magistrate for five years in the mid-1990s. He was elected to a four-year term last fall to serve in District 1, which includes the Mattoon community.
McConnell is survived by his wife, Helen; and several children.

Flanary
CHICAGO, Ill ­ Wilson Oral Flanary, formerly of Marion, died April 25, 2003 at the age of 103. He was the last known WW I veteran from Crittenden County. He was the son of Margaret Daughtrey and Carl Flanary, both of Crittenden County.
Preceding him in death was his wife Virginia Easley, formerly of Marion.
He is survived by two daughters, Doris Ann Wilson and Norma Jean Shultz, both of the Chicago area, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
After leaving the Army, Flanary became account supervisor for U.S. Steel of Chicago for almost 40 years, then worked in his son-in-law's firm for 20 years.
Services were April 30, officiated by his sister-in-law Sister Lucy Tedrick. His burial was at Cedar Park Cemetery in Blue Island, Ill.

Travis
Donald "Buck" Travis, 66, of Marion, died May 1, 2003 at Salem Springlake Care Center. He was a member of Marion United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Etoy Travis of Marion; two daughters, Wendy Winders of Marion and Angela Griffey of Indianapolis; his mother, Opal Travis of Marion; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dallas Travis.

Humphrey attended Union Grove General Baptist Church in Caldwell County and was employed as a quality control inspector at DDP in Kuttawa.
Surviving are two daughters, Kelley Hogan of Caldwell County and Renae Humphrey of Princeton; a brother, Marvin Brinkley of Lyon County; a sister, Margaret Todd of Crittenden County; her foster father, James Francis Kaestner; four foster brothers, John Kaestner, Jimmy Kaestner and Joel Kaestner, all of Illinois; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Buntley and Charlene Lewis Brinkley; and her foster mother, Helen Marie Kaestner.

McDaniel
SALEM, Ky. ­ William "Tommy" McDaniel, 79, died May 2, 2003 at Salem Springlake Care Center. He was a member of the Evansville Eagles Club and was a retired machinist for Whirlpool in Evansville.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine McDaniel of Salem; a sister, Lois Fiola of Sarasota, Fla.; and a brother, Carter McDaniel of Cleveland, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Allie McDaniel.

Madileen Small, 98, of Marion, died May 3, 2003 at Crittenden Hospital.
She graduated from Marion High School and later the University of Kentucky with an AB Degree. She taught school in Kentucky and entered federal service in 1934 in the Naval Ordinance System Command Department. She retired in 1966 after more than 32 years in federal service. She was a member of First United Presbyterian Church in Marion.
Surviving are five nephews, Wayne Lowery of Spokane, Wash., John Nacey, Jr., of Folcroft, Penn., Donald S. Lowery of Fallbrook, Calif., Richard Small of Marion and Ronald Rodeman of Albuquerque, N.M.; three nieces, Patsy Thiesson of Osprey, Fla., Mary Sue Habacker of Lancaster, Penn., and Donna Lee Nesbitt of Albuquerque.
She wa preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

FREDONIA, Ky. ­ Funeral services for John N. Tinsley, 69, were held May 5 at Dunn's Funeral Home in Eddyville with Father Maurice Tiell officiating. Burial followed in Fredonia Cemetery.
Tinsley died May 2, 2003 at Riversbend Retirement Community in Kuttawa.
He was a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church in Eddyville and the American Legion. He was a U.S. Army Veteran.

Raymond Thurman, 90, of Marion, died May 5, 2003 at Crittenden County Convalescent Center. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, was a retired minister of 68 years and a retired teacher after 20 years of service. He was a graduate of Murray State University and attended Campbellsville College and Southern Seminary.
Survivors include two sons, Rev. Jerry Thurman and Jim Thurman, both of Marion; a sister, Rowena Campbell of Marion; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

BENTON, Mo. ­ Charles Stevens Woolf, 88, of Benton, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003 at Sikeston Convalescent Center in Sikeston.

Born in Tolu, Ky., Mr. Woolf was a retired farmer who retired from Edwards Fertilizer in Cerro Gordo, Ill. His parents were John Thomas and Myra Tom Stevens Woolf. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Nelma Louise Fuller; sons, Dwight David Woolf, Paul Wade Woolf; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Woolf; and a sister.

SALEM ­ Jeptha Hayden Moxley, 81, of Salem, died Thursday, March 20, 2003 at Livingston Hospital.

The son of John Given Moxley and Katherine Lynn Moxley, Mr. Moxley grew up on a farm near Cedar Grove.

Survivors include three sons, Jerry Moxley of Sturgis, David Moxley of Marion, Perry Moxley of Salem; five daughters, Linda Belt of Sturgis, Helen Crawford of Franklin, Brenda Rittenberry of Burna, Joyce Collins of Marion, Terry Ellis of Smithland; one sister, Margaret Christine Moxley Cowen; 25 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

SALEM ­ Charles Freeman Stone, 71, of Salem, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003 at his home.

Hickey
Edward Pete Hickey Jr., 79. died Friday, March 21, 2003 at Crittenden Hospital.

He was a member of Marion Baptist Church, lifetime member of VFW Post 1913 - Hopkinsville, retired superintendent of Crittenden County Schools, a salesman for Apex Chemical and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Emma Hickey of Marion; two brothers, Tom Hickey and Bill Hickey, both of Hopkinsville; and four sisters, Madiline McMasters, Mary Damron, Helen Poole and Janice Gerbo, all of Hopkinsville.

He was preceded in death by one son, Dennis Hickey, and two sisters. His parents were Edward Pete Hickey Sr. and Ethel Hickey.

Laddie W. Armstrong, 50, of Marion, died Tuesday, March 18. He was a member of American Legion Post 111 in Marion, a long-time co-owner of Marion Body Shop and a former deputy sheriff.

Surviving are his wife, Agnes Armstrong of Marion; a son, Tracy Armstrong of Marion; a brother, Gary Armstrong of Marion; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandchild.

MADISONVILLE ­ Charles Marlin Hanor, 67, of Madisonville, died Monday, March 17, 2003 at his home.

He retired as superintendent of Kyler Bridge Construction in Cadiz. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and attended First Church of God Church in Madisonville.

Quertermous Lucy Gregory Quertermous, 68, of Lexington, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002. She is survived by two sons, Paul G. Quertermous of Georgetown and James D. Quertermous of Lexington; two daughters, Nancy Q. Yost of Gainesville, Ga., and LuAnn Douglas of Harrodsburg; her mother, Lois Gregory of Murray; three brothers, John Gregory, Richard Gregory and Jim Gregory, all of Marion; one sister, Rose Marie Gregory; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, John D. Quertermous Jr. Her father was J.L. Gregory. Services were Tuesday, Dec. 31 at W.R. Milward Mortuary-Broadway in Lexington with burial in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
